Welcome to the Kvarken Archipelago!

A Valuable Natural Heritage Site

The unique Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s only Natural World Heritage Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Together with Sweden’s High Coast, the Kvarken Archipelago is the best place in the world to experience and understand the land uplift phenomenon caused by the last ice age.

A part of the World Heritage Site High Coast / Kvarken Archipelago is located in Malax. The Kvarken Archipelago is unique due to its geological entirety and distinctive land uplift. The land rises by 8–8,5 mm per year, creating approximately 1 km2 of new land each year.

The unusual vegetation and rugged nature on Rönnskär and Storskäret offer exceptional nature experiences.

Thanks to the municipality’s long coastline, part of the archipelago can also be experienced from land. Hike through forests and trails, bike, paddle a canoe, or fish. Ice-skate or ski in winter.

You’re welcome to explore the hiking trails or take a boat trip in the beautiful archipelago. In Malax, you’re always close to nature, and sometimes it can be perfectly, perfectly quiet.
